I Saw Venom And Fucking Loved It, Man!

I saw this in the theater and fucking loved it, man. Watched it again with the gf now that HDrips have come out and she loved it too (luckily we have a pretty similar taste). Forget the “professional” film critics, this movie is hilarious and awesome.

I think they were expecting it to be the same as every other superhero movie in the world but Venom in the comics is a pretty silly character and so’s this movie rightfully so. It really captures the essence of Venom I think.

This movie is actually a romantic comedy (serious), and it’s great. Going into it expecting an action movie that takes itself super seriously is foolish, because that’s not what it is.

I’m also a huge fan of Carnage so the tease with him in the midcredits has me super hyped, lol. Nobody even understands, man. I’ve been the biggest Venom & Carnage stan for forever so this is huge for me.

I was hyped from the minute I heard about it like a year ago and it didn’t disappoint. Can’t wait for the sequel lol. I like how the film is structured as a typical superhero origin story (meet guy, guy fucks up, guy gets powers) but Eddie Brock isn’t really interested in going out and saving people.

Sure, he takes issue with Venom eating policemen, but he’s mostly in it for himself. (Though, the symbiotes sought to consume humanity and Eddie/Venom worked to prevent it, but that’s arguably selfish, since that would mean their end, too.)

Venom, as a character, is really interesting and, though it was underexplored, I really liked the interplay between him and Brock. A truly alien mind is difficult for humans to compehend or write (for obvious reasons) but I do hope we get more conflict and synthesis of the human and alien sets of values. We already saw this with the previous conversations regarding eating people.

Supposedly there were 30-40 minutes cut from it, and I thought it really could have used some of that put back. For example, Venom just tells Tom Hardy that he was considered a loser back on their home planet or wherever they’re from – I think that’s information that should have come out organically in Venom’s interactions with Riot. (Show, don’t tell!)

And then there’s the fact that Tom Hardy could (and should) have declined his assignment to do a puff piece interview of Riz Ahmed, by pointing out that he has a conflict of interest, given that his fiancee does legal work for the company.
